Taking me across the Kei River mouth in an old ritual where muddy banks give way to opening sky with the reassuring sound of oars pulling against the tidal current thrills a primal heartbeat in me.
Ferryman is also a metaphor for memory which is the link between here and there crossing boundaries both revealed and hidden.
Each painterly journey is about itself in surface tension and depth. In blobs of colour and washed out layers, triggered by the sensation of a specific place at a given time, this work anticipates returning and remembers encounters in England and South Africa.
Gallery SCA, Shropshire Contemporary Arts, showed an exhibition of "Work on Paper" from 5th March - 2nd April 2011.
